Desire for Magic: Patrick Nagatani 1978—2008 // retrospective monograph // University of New Mexico Art Museum // published: September 2010 // edited: Michele Penhall // The monograph presents seven distinctive bodies of work realized as one cohesive vision. A recurring design element is the circle motif which begins on the front jacket and is integrated throughout the monograph as metaphor, a diagram, a die-cut, an insignia and finally, as a depression on the back of the book.
Encased in a skin of soft translucent vinyl, the reader is introduced haptically to Nagatani's work which functions simultaneously as a continuum of the American Pop Art tradition and as an illusion of authenticity; in image, persona and history. The monograph includes reinterpretations by Christopher Kaltenbach of the artist's maps and Projects' Chronology, and illustrated colophon.
